Mark Taylor’s Metal-Talk ‘Merton Manor Club’ review

Many Thanks to Mark Taylor for coming down and giving both his support and excellent review!!!

PRAYING MANTIS
MERTON MANOR CLUB, LONDON

What a good way to warm up for another year full of more gigs than with a low key warm up Praying Mantis gig before they head off to Japan for gigs in Tokyo and Osaka.

Japan has been kind to Praying Mantis over the years. Whilst the rest of the world was getting drenched in a sludge of grunge in the early nineties, the Japanese market was lapping up a trio of albums; ‘Predator In Disguise’, ‘A Cry For The New World’ and ‘To The Power Of Ten’ which kept the band very much alive.

MARK TAYLOR’S BIG CITY NIGHTS

HARD ROCK HELL V

(**Many thanks to Mark Taylor for his fantastic review**)

”Praying Mantis are a band who are going from strength to strength. In fact they are better now than they have ever been in their career. I thought that their brand of harmonic melodic rock might be too much for most sozzled minds on this graveyard shift but Praying Mantis soon captured everyone’s imagination as they gave a very well crafted and polished set.

Praying Mantis … finally!!

Yes, true, despite a whole year waiting, finally on Saturday 26N in Barcelona, true NWOBHM Legends were delivering a great show. Raven and Praying Mantis were headliners. Before, Bourbon Society, Wild and Tysondog were opening the festival METALCOVA IV.

Around 23:00 h local time, Praying Mantis went on scene and checking sound. After 20 minutes which seemed eternal, finally thumbs up from Tino and drummer.

Both Stampede and Praying Mantis were thrown under the NWOBHM banner but neither were exactly heavy metal as such but played with a more hard melodic rock approach.

Both bands are experiencing a renewed interest. Praying Mantis recieved some rave reviews for their recent ‘Sanctuary’ release and have just revisited some old ground recording five older classics with their ‘Metalmorphosis’ EP.

kobra and the lotus

The songs of Kobra And The Lotus deserve to be heard by a large audience and on the strength of this performance, that is bound to happen at some point in time.

But on Sunday evening in Camden there was a growing concern that The Barfly would be only half-full, or half-empty, depending on your outlook as Metalworks were playing five doors down in The Monarch, Eye Hate God were fifteen minutes walk away in The Koko and the hottest ticket in town, Alice Cooper at The 100 Club (click here for Johnny Churchill’s review…), would surely account for some of the inevitable lack of audience at The Barfly?

98 Tour Reports

These are my personal observations of the dates on the tour. They are very
subjective so probably worthless but I am happy to share them with you. It is
safe to say I thought every gig great so don't expect any musical comment from
me. I enjoyed the gigs completely as a fan and that is why the atmosphere at the
Sendia gig made that my favourite of the tour. If any one who went to a gig
wants to write reviews for me I would love to add them
