Bob Angelo

It appears that Bob Angelo is also called Bob Sawyer.

The Alt.Rock-n-Roll.Metal.Ironmaiden FAQ file which is currently maintained by Vartan Narinian <vsn@ic.ac.uk> says "Bob Sawyer had been dropped earlier along the way (end of '76), because he was always trying to upstage Dave Murray, instead of complementing his style. He played with Praying Mantis afterwards."

According to a Pete Frame Iron Maiden Family Tree Bob was in Weapon from July to Late 1981. He then left and joined The Rauch & Roll Band and High Roller.

Gary Barden

Michael Schenker group - At least the 1st album. German TV Station WDR recorded a gig at Hamburg on 24/1/81 and have broadcast it several times

D.B.L Supplied me the following info on Barden:

This is what I know of Barden from the MSG days, M.S split from UFO in 1979, formed MSG,1st LP came out in 1980, Barden on vox. 2nd LP. "MSG II"1981, Barden vox. Then Barden split MSG due to "differences" with Schenker. Barden was replaced by Graham Bonnet (Rainbow singer who replaced Dio when he left) he sings on "Assault Attack"1982, Bonnet became ill on the 1982 tour and was no longer able to keep up w/the schedule. Schenker brought back Barden to fill in for the rest of the tour I gather they patched things up on the road, MSG's 4th LP. "Built to Destroy" 1983 had Barden back on vox. (I saw this tour and know Barden toured for this LP.) After that I don't know what happened. MSG seemed to "disappear" for a few years until the release of the 1987 MSG LP. w/R.McAuley on vox. The first 4 MSG LP's are kind of hard to find as they are out of print. I have found 1st on CD, "MSG II", and I am really wanting to get my hands on a copy of "Built to Destroy" on CD Jon, hope this info helps you out and that I have not bored you w/info you all ready know. If you have any more questions let me know or if you would like any additional info on the MSG LP's I'll be happy to help.

Miguel Terol Sent me the following info. It's a slight duplicate but I thought well written so I won't re-write it

Gary Barden was in a pub ban, Fraser Nash, when he joined Michael Schenker to begin the idea of the MSG. As the only members of MSG, they recorded during May-Jul 1980 the album "The Michael Schenker Group" (Aug 80) with sessionmen: Mo Foster (b), Don Airey (k), Simon Phillips (dr), produced by Roger Glover.

Next step was to put a real band, in August 1980:

Michael Schenker (g)
Gary Barden (v)
Chris Glen (b)
Paul Raymond (k)
Cozy Powell (dr)

They recorded during Spring 1981 the 2nd album: "MSG" (Sep 81). Next album was a 2Lp live concert, recorded at the Tokyo Budokan on August 12, 1981:

"One night at Budokan" (Feb 82).

In November 81, Gary Barden and Paul Raymond leave the band. The new lineup is (Feb 82):

Michael Schenker (g)
Graham Bonnet (v)
Chris Glen (b)
Cozy Powell (dr)

but in April 92, Cozy Powell quits:

Michael Schenker (g)
Graham Bonnet (v)
Chris Glen (b)
Ted McKenna (dr)

They release "Assault attack" (Oct 82), but Bonnet left the group with problems with Michael in August 82, even before the album was released. And Gary Barden, who had been cutting some demos with John Lockton (g) and Clive Edwards (dr) since he left MSG, is recruited again.

Michael Schenker (g)
Gary Barden (v)
Chris Glen (b)
Ted McKenna (dr)

We can see the following sentence in the "Assault attack" thanks credits, confirming that Barden was in the group before the album was released:

"A special thanks for the past to Cozy Powell and for the future to Gary Barden".

They played in the 1982 Reading Festival, and they appear in the subsequent live 2Lp from those shows: "Reading Rock", with 1 track.

The next album was "Built to destroy" (1983) - I don't have it, so I can't tell you which is the lineup, but Gary was definitely in it.

The lineups changes again:

Michael Schenker (g)
Gary Barden (v)
Chris Glen (b)
Andy Nye (k)
Ted McKenna (dr)

Next step is another live album: "Rock will never die", with an augmented lineup:

Michael Schenker (g)
Gary Barden (v)
Derek St. Holmes (g)
Chris Glen (b)
Andy Nye (k)
Ted McKenna (dr)

After that album, Barden leaves the group again, and MSG will convert from 'Michael Schenker Group' into 'McAuley-Schenker Group'.

M.G.MacMillan tells me "Gary Barden was in Statetrooper. They released the 'She got the look' 7"/12" on Neat in 86 and a self-titled LP on FM in 87. The LP also contains a version of MSG's 'Armed and ready'."

In 2002 the Statetrooper CD was Statetrooper album was released on CD by Escape Music

Bruce Bisland

All-Stars - Scratch Records - ASBCD 001 (now deleted), Grand Slamm Records SLAMCD 23 and the copy I managed to get hold of, is on the Japanese Polydor label PDCP-1036. Somewhere Bruce does an additional backing vocal but is not included in the track by track credits.

M.G.MacMillan tells me "Bruce Bisland was in Statetrooper. They released the 'She got the look' 7"/12" on Neat in 86 and a self-titled LP on FM in 87. The LP also contains a version of MSG's 'Armed and ready'."

He also tells me Bruce was in a band called Weapon in 1982. In 1984 Weapon reformed and Bruce "gusted" on Drums (although they did not release anything). At the time Bruce was officially a member of Wildfire. Wildfire released

Brute force and ignorance LP SKULL 8307 (1983)
Summer lightning LP SKULL 8338 (1983)
Nothing lasts forever 7" GUTS 8403 (1984)
Jerusalem 7" Mausoleum GUTS 8405 (1984)

And they should not be confused with a Wildfire that evolved out of a band called Red Alert.

Oliver Klemm added Bruce Bisland first came to Prominence with WEAPON who released on 7"/12" single "It's a Mad World" in 1980 (Weap 1). That same year, they supported Motorhead in the UK (see back of "No Sleep Till Hammersmith" for proof).

Since 1992 Bruce has also worked with Andy's Scotts version of The Sweet. He even appeared on an album called "Glitz, Blitz & Hitz". Praying Mantis is definitely Bruce's first band but he has to earn a living.

Prior to the Sweet Bruce was with Tino in a couple pub bands called "Paddy Goes to Hollyhead" (1989-1991?) which then became "Wandering Crutchless" when the lead singer left.

In 2002 the Statetrooper CD was Statetrooper album was released on CD by Escape Music

Clive Burr

Alexandre Gastaldo Badolato tells me of the following:-

Desperado! - Bloodied but Unbowed
Label : Destroyer Records Number : No Number
Line Up : Dee Snider - Vocals (ex-Twisted Sister)
Clive Burr - Drums
Marc Russel - Bass
Bernie Torme - Guitars

I ordered it directly from Destroyer Records in New York . It cost US$ 35,00 and took about 2 months to arrive. It was never officially released because they had a fight with the original record company . The company decided not to release them anymore and asked 500.000 dollars to sell the songs back to the band.

According to a Pete Frame Iron Maiden Family Tree Clive was in Alcatrazz during the Spring 1983. He also appeared on a Trust album "Man Trap" in 1984

The majority of below is stolen from the Iron Maiden FAQ file usually posted once a month on Alt.Rock-n-Roll.Metal.Ironmaiden and currently maintained by Vartan Narinian <vsn@ic.ac.uk>

Clive Burr - 2nd drummer for IRON MAIDEN (Jan 1980 - Dec 1982). Recorded on all that Dennis Stratton recorded with the band, KILLERS album, "Maiden Japan" EP, and THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST album.

OTHER WORKS:

SAMSON (Early 1978 - 1979) - original drummer, played on first NWOBHM single ever "Mr. Rock N Roll" with Chris Aylmer on bass and Paul Samson on guitars and vocals.

TRUST (1983? - ?) - replaced Nicko McBrain as a session drummer for the album "Trust" (1982). This is not to be confused with their 1979 debut album, which is also called "Trust". TRUST is regarded by many to be the greatest French heavy metal band ever. GOGMAGOG (Jun 1985 - ?) - drummer on "I Will Be There" EP. That is all the band recorded.

ELIXIR - drummer on second album LETHAL POTION.

TRUE BRITS (1992) - Released an album READY TO RUMBLE in 1992 with Lea Hart (Vocals, Guitar), Dave Senczak (Guitar), Dennis Stratton (Vocals, Guitar), and Mel Gagbbltas (Bass). This might not actually be a band. I think they (Clive, Dennis, etc.) just joined the album of Lea Hart (ex-FASTWAY). There are many (36) names of special guests on this album, for example, Scott Gorham, Neil Murray, Paul Dianno, Eddie Clarke, Paul Samson, Gary Barden, Tino Troy, etc.

Steve Carroll

M.G.MacMillan tells me Steve was previously in a rather punky band called Little Bo Bitch (!), who released a self-titled LP and a 7" called Its only love on the Cobra/Harvest label in 1979. It is also thought there was a 2nd single featuring Steve called "Take it easy".

In an article in Ho-no-o in Aug 98 it mentions Steve was on The Lonely Boys self-titled album on Harvest ST-12030 from 1979. Apparently. Lonely Boys was Little Bo Bitch

Steve on Lonely Boys album cover?

A unknown paper clipping states the following "Nervous German, a Hamburg Based band formed by ex-solo Jets vocalist Grant Stevens , Have now been joined by Steve Carroll from Praying Mantis. The have a single called "There boots are made for walking" out on Rondolet and an album called "Desolation Zone" coming shortly."

Paul Dianno

Paul did a lot of Work on the True Brit Sessions.

Hard as Iron - Paul Dianno & Dennis Stratton - CDTB 176 by Magnum Music. This contains 10 tracks. 6 tracks are on True Brits. It also includes the "I've had enough" track, sung by Dennis from Metal Monsters and The Original Iron Men. Plus 3 new tracks I have not located on anything else. Paul sings on "No Repair" Dennis does the other two.

Metal Christmas - Paul Dianno sings four tracks on this Disky CD catalogue number DCD 5419. The songs are White Xmas, Santa Claus is coming to town, Silent Night (rocks), Another Rock'n'Roll Xmas.

KILLERS - Apart from Murder one mentioned below. Killers released an album Called Menace To Society (CDBLEED11 on Bleeding Heart Records) in 1994. This is very much Grunt metal. The band on this disk were Steve Hopgood Drums, Cliff Evans, Guitars and Gavin Cooper bass

PAUL DI'ANNO'S BATTLEZONE (1986 - 1987) - recorded in 1986 "Fighting Back" recently released on Zoom Club Records ZCR CD2 and in 1987 "Children of Madness" Zoom Club Records ZCR CD3.

M.G.MacMillan tells me "Dianno released Flaming Heart as a 7" in Japan and recorded a session (5:10:84). Lone Wolf was comprised of Paul and ex-members of Minas Tirith, with the exception of their vocalist. The project was pretty short-lived and nothing was released."

The majority of below is stolen from the Iron Maiden FAQ file usually posted once a month on Alt.Rock-n-Roll.Metal.Ironmaiden and currently maintained by Vartan Narinian <vsn@ic.ac.uk>
BIRD OF PREY (before 1977) - not much around.

IRON MAIDEN - Mid 1977 - Sep 1981). Recorded with IRON MAIDEN "The Soundhouse Tapes" EP, "Sanctuary" and "Wrathchild" on METAL FOR MUTHAS compilation, IRON MAIDEN album, KILLERS album, LIVE PLUS ONE live album, "Maiden Japan" (aka "Heavy Metal Army") EP, "Women In Uniform" EP, and "Sanctuary" EP.
LONE WOLF (1982 - ?) - not much around, but supposedly sounds like watered-down WHITESNAKE. This was a 6-piece band.

GOGMAGOG (1985) - NWOBHM supergroup, featuring Dianno on vocals, Pete Willis (DEF LEPPARD) and Jannick Gers (GILLAN) on guitars, Neil Murray (WHITESNAKE) on bass guitar, and Clive Burr (IRON MAIDEN) on drums. Released in 1985 a demo E.P. "I Will Be There." DI'ANNO (1984 - May 1985) - I don't know much about this band except it sounds like JOURNEY. Released an album Dianno, as well as a single from this album "Heartuser" b/w "Road Rat" in 1984, under the FM Coast to Coast label (a division of Heavy Metal Records). Also released an album

TWO SWIMMERS & A BAG OF JOCKIES in 1984 with Lee Slater (Guitars, Vocals), P J Ward (Guitars, Vocals), Kevin Browne (Bass, Vocals), Mark Venables (Keyboards), and Mark Stuart (Drums). Mark Stuart left the band before recording, so Dave Irving played drums on this album. (This information was confirmed by Dave Irving's son March 2001. Dave was originally in Sad Cafe)

KILLERS (Jan 1992 - present) - featured Steve Hopgood on drums and Nick Burr (Not Clive Burr's brother as some seem to think) on guitars. Released MURDER ONE in 1992.

Bernie Shaw

Georgios Sidiropoulos tells me Paris released a single

You are the one B/W Not Feeling the Rain

But I don't know if Bernie is on it.

Miguel Terol tells me

Bernie Shaw joined Grand Prix when they called themselves Paris, late in 1978. After that, they changed their name to Grand Prix. Shaw left Grand Prix soon after the Reading '80 Festival.

Grand Prix LP RCA PL25321 (1980)
Thinking of you 7" RCA 7 (1980)
Which way did the wind blow 7" RCA 18 (1980)

Miguel Terol tells me the complete (until now) Bernie Shaw discography with Uriah Heep is:

"Live in Moscow" (1987)
"Raging silence" (1989)
"Different world" (1991)
"Sea of light" (1995)
"Spellbinder - live" (1996)

I also have a video "Raging through the silence" from 1989.

In 1999 Bernie released a Mini-CD with Dale Collins. It is called Picking Locks and contains 3 songs. Two originals by Shaw/Collins and a cover of David Essex's Rock On. The CD is available from Dave Owen Or the Official Collins/Shaw Site.

Dennis Stratton

Dennis did a lot of Work on the True Brit Sessions.

LionHeart - Released an album called She's Hot which is currently available on CD in Japan. (Sony Records SRCS 6245). The band were Chad Brown on lead vocals, Dennis on Guitar and backing vocals, Steve Mann Lead guitar and Rocky Newton Bass guitar. The songs are definitely a form of Pop Metal. One of the covers on this album is Gillan's Nightmare. M.G.MacMillan tells me "Lionheart also released 'Die for love' as a 7", and recorded a BBC Radio session (29:3:85)"

Remus Down Boulevard Malcolm Oliver sent me the following information

Remus Down Boulevard were a popular rock band who played the London Pubs and clubs in the 1970's. Dennis Stratton was the Rhythm Guitarist. The lead Guitarist/main singer was a Dave Edwards. As well as some original material, they played some cover versions such as Neil Young's Southern man.

The only recording of this band that I know of is an album called "Live - A Week the the Bridge E16". It was recorded live at the Bridge House Pub in Canning Town, London, in April, 1978. It features six different bands. Remus had two songs on it including a number called 'Gunrunner'.

I think RDB split in 1981. They did a one-off of reunion gig in 1982 at the Bridge House. (Earlier in their career they did in fact play the famous London Marquee club a number of times).

The majority of below is stolen from the Iron Maiden FAQ file usually posted once a month on Alt.Rock-n-Roll.Metal.Ironmaiden and currently maintained by Vartan Narinian <vsn@ic.ac.uk>

Dennis Stratton - second official 2nd lead guitarist (Jan 1980 - Oct 1980).

With IRON MAIDEN recorded on the IRON MAIDEN album, "Women In Uniform" EP, subsequent singles, and LIVE PLUS ONE live album.

OTHER WORKS:

LIONHEART (Oct 1980 - 1985) - first NWOBHM supergroup, with Jess Cox (TYGERS OF PAN TANG) on vocals, Stratton on guitar, Steve Mann on guitar, Rocky Newton on bass guitar, and Frank Noon (DEF LEPPARD, soon to be in WAYSTED) on drums. Though formed in 1980, never recorded anything until 1985, an album HOT TONIGHT, then split.

Miguel Terol tells me The Lionheart lineup that played at Reading '81 Festival was: Dennis Stratton (g,v), Steve Mann (k,g), Rocky Newton (b,v), Les Binks (dr, ex-Judas Priest).

Another lineup of Lionheart was: Jess Cox, Frank Noon (dr), John Farlam (???), Reuben Archer (v), all of them played in the group after the 1981 Reading Festival.

Mark Thompson-Smith

Mark Thompson-Smith and Gary Flounders, who is a producer of "A Cry for The New World" and support keyboard player of 1993 tour, recorded 2 songs for "Metal For Muthas '92' (Pony Canyon PCCY-00392) as FLIGHT 19

Mark Thompson-Smith was in Idol Rich, who released the private 'Working girls' 12" in 1985. Mark didn't sing on this though.

After being replaced by Snake from Tobruk he formed a band called Touche, who didn't release anything but eventually became Lionsheart.

In 1998 Mark released a solo album on Mainframe Records MF101 called "A Far Cry From New Jersey" I have a couple of Real Audio clips on the Mark-Thompson-Smith Interview page
