The British-NWoBHM stalwarts (or at least melodic rockers?) Are from Praying Mantis back with a special limited edition EP to mark the 30th anniversary of the first full-length “Tell Me No Lies”. On this EP are 5 re-mastered classic tracks, with the line-up (Chris Troy / bass & vocals, Tino Troy / Guitars & vocals, Andy Burgess / Guitars, Benjy Reid / Drums, Mike Freeland / vocals).

There are many bands from the era of New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, which never made ​​the final breakthrough, although they have outstanding song material. Praying Mantis is one of those bands.

After all, the band around singer Mike Freeland 30 years until now held by many. 30 years is a long time and a reason to celebrate an anniversary. Praying Mantis have dug deep into their treasure chest, and “Children Of The Earth”, “Lovers To The Grave” and “Panic In The Streets” three songs from their debut album as well as “Captured City” and “Praying Mantis” track again.

Praying Mantis once more emerges from the old British scene of the early 80’s and covers five of their classic tracks, showing that redoing classic songs isn’t always a negative cash-grab that reeks of either boredom or lack of ideas. Metalmorphosis takes five of the band’s classic tracks and gives them a modern day edge, all the while retaining the original magic that makes albums like Time Tells No Lies so amazing.

Always more of a rock band than metal practitioners, Praying Mantis’s inception during the NWOBHM heyday always seemed to me like bad timing.
Consequently theirs career path was a difficult one, taking them down cul-de-sacs and dead ends.
In this, their 30^th Anniversary year, they’ve released ‘Metalmorphosis’, a perfectly chosen repertoire that embraces the birth of a band, in the form of a 5 track EP of re-recorded songs from the debut album and before.
There are the pre album singles, ‘Praying Mantis’ and ‘Captured City’, and there are
‘Children Of The Earth’, ‘Lovers To The Grave’ and ‘Panic In The Streets’, taken from the debut, ‘Time Tells No Lies’.
Indeed it does not, and these tracks stand up well.
Wisely, the band have chosen not to indulge in selfish reinterpretation, but to use today’s studio technology to release the primitive power inherent in those original recordings.
Current vocalist, Mike Freeland fits the songs like a glove, and the band’s glorious mix of axe solos, earnest lyrics, driving rhythms and soaring choruses still seems extraordinarily rich, even by today’s standards.
Here’s to the next 30 years.
