![]() Inside the German edition booklet. Only The Children Cry is a new vocal on the instrumentation of the Only The Children Cry EP Version. |
This is just a great melodic rock album, very good production and fine melodies, also vocalist have agreat voice.I heard this album first time 24.7.02(yesterday)
but i was impressed immediately. There are 5-6 very high
quality aor/hardrock songs here in my opinion. If you liked “nowhere to hide album”,you will appreciate this too.
After Time Tells no Lies this should be considered as the heavier an closer to melodic hard rock sound and style album. The riffs and double guitar solos and bridges are outstanding with Tino and Denis at their best. The guitar sound is sharp and strikes you from the first song (Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark)rather “treblish” as Tino himself would comment, comparing to Mantis’s later works but quite a lot of fans like it this way, and I don’t blame them . The bass and drum line is faultless and bound together perfect. Gary Barden is also at his best,he’s recorded superbly in the studio and fits perfectly with the style and sound of the songs,as one of a real pro rock singer. It wasn’t to be the same with the live performances in Japan, and the difficulties are obvious in Captured Live in Tokyo. This record is a must have for every Mantis fan and not only, my favourites besides “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” are “Only the Children Cry” and “Welcome to my Hollywood” . As always the Troy bros find the perfect balance between the power of the rock sound and melody that characterises their song writing.
To the Power of Ten
To the Power of Ten is the worst Mantis record. And it is not a bad one. But somehow i feel Gary’s voice does not suit in Mantis legacy… in my humble opinion. Gary does great in his record “In Love and War” or all the old MSG stuff (Cry for the Nations, Attack of the Mad Axeman, On a on, Never trust a stranger, rock will never die…), but to me he is not the ideal voice for Mantis.
Anyway there are great songs: Welcome to my Hollywood (the best song), Don’t be afraid of the dark, Victory, Only the children cry…
But I can’t stand songs as Ball of confusion or title track, they are simply horrible 🙁
Despite of being the weakest release, there are great songs.
8/10 nice to have
